Coming in 2025: Shaw’s new secondary school!

Initial stages of construction at Mary Help of Christians Catholic College are scheduled to commence this year, in preparation for the inaugural Year 7 cohort in 2025.

Shaw residents will soon gain a co-educational Catholic secondary school - the first school of its kind in the Townsville region. The land adjacent to St Benedict’s on Dalrymple Road was purchased back in 2021, following the proposal of a new secondary school to meet demands brought on by population growth.

Mary Help of Christians will welcome 120 Year 7 students next January, growing year on year to approximately 1,000 students across six year levels. The first cohort is expected to graduate in 2030.

Mardi Grubba was recently announced as the school’s first principal. Prior to the appointment, Grubba served as Deputy Principal at Southern Cross Catholic College. She has pledged Mary Help of Christians will provide a “holistically balanced education”, where a strong spiritual foundation will guide students to become compassionate, moral and contributing citizens.

The new school will offer a huge comfort to families within The Reserve community, especially those with primary school-aged children. With just a quick drive or bike ride to school drop-off, this school will make the morning routine as easy as could be. The recent road expansion in the area has also anticipated the surplus in traffic that will come with the opening of the school.
